14 Of My Favorite Things About Mt Leconte Lodge

I have been leading trips up to Mt Leconte since 2015 and there is a reason I go back again and again. In honor of Valentine’s Day I thought it would be fun to share my 14 favorite things about Mt Leconte Lodge!

10. The stick to your ribs food at the top. While the food served at the top of the mountain isn’t fresh because they don’t have refrigeration up there they still manage to make it tasty AND it is super filling. You will burn loads of calories hiking to the top, to sunset and sunrise so want to make sure you fill up on the eats. I especially love the biscuits with apple butter & honey for breakfast!

9. The warm Hudson Bay blankets. The blankets on each bed are classic. I love not only the way that they look in the rustic cabins, but they are super warm. It gets chilly on top of the mountain - even in the middle of Summer.

8.

7.

6. The people. Not only are the people that come on the excursions amazing, but also the people you will pass on the trail and staying at the top. Everyone has a story and the hikers going up to Mt Leconte Lodge are one of a kind!

5. Champagne & watermelon at the top of the mountain. Did you know it is tradition to carry a watermelon up the mountain along with a few bottles of champagne to toast at the top? It will be the best watermelon & glass of champagne you have ever had!

4. Dunking in the cool river stream at the end of the hike. This is like the natural cold water plunge everyone is doing today. Dunking in cold water is all the rage and there are certainly reasons why. Getting in cold water is very beneficial for your health. It decreases inflammation, speeds metabolism, boosts mood, reduces anxiety and speeds recovery.

3. The llamas… Did you know llamas carry everything to the top of the mountain. All of the food and bedding is carried up by llamas on Tuesdays and Fridays so if you are visiting at that time it is a great opportunity to see these cute creatures.

2. The hike up to Mt Leconte Lodge. There are 5 different routes you can take get to the top. My personal favorite is the Alum Cave trail which offers hiking along a beautiful mountain stream as well as sweeping views of the Smokies. It is the shortest and steepest of the trails (a bit over 5 miles long).

1. The views at sunset and sunrise. There are two different viewing locations. The hike to see sunset is about 1/4 mile and totally worth it. The hike to sunrise is worth it was well and the distance is one mile. Every experience is different. Each sunrise and sunset is unique and I have enjoyed each and every single one!

Join us on the upcoming “Be Fierce & Flourish” Mt Leconte Climb this coming May 16th-19th, 2024. It’s going to be amazing! A bucket list hike for sure.

Top 10 Things To Do In Croatia

A year ago this Summer my husband and I visited Croatia for our honeymoon. Tho we did not travel the entire country, we did see A LOT! As avid runners, cyclists, swimmers, kayakers, and overall adventurers we were able to cover a lot of territory in a short period of time and I wanted to share with you our top 10 favorite things to do in the beautiful country.

We were in Croatia for 10 days and started our trip inland making our way to the coast for a sailing and island hopping adventure. We traveled with Yacht Getaways for the sailing portion of the trip and I highly recommend the guide company. The boat was fabulous and skipper and crew couldn’t have been better.

Alright, let’s dive into our top 10 favorite activities on our trip. These are not in order from favorite to least favorite. These are just 10 things we REALLY enjoyed during our travels.

1) Plitvice National Park : Plitvice is the land of the waterfalls. I have never seen so many waterfalls in my life! My best tip here is to go EARLY as soon as the park opens. Plitivce is one of the most popular attractions in Croatia, beating the crowds is a must. But, don’t let that stop you. The trails are actually two person wide wooden walkways around the waterfalls, so the lines of people get long when the park fills up. My husband and I did all 14-miles and if you are in shape and can do that I highly recommend the full loop. There are ferries you can take to cut off some mileage, but you will be waiting in lines. We did a nice, enjoyable walk/run around the park and carried plenty of snacks and water. The last few miles of our adventure were wrought with tourists, but we were so grateful to have experienced the majority of the park without droves of people around.

2) Palace Elisabeth : One word - GORGEOUS! I got the most amazing facial of my life and my husband a massage at Palace Elisabeth. This spa is the most beautiful I have ever been to. Upon entering you go up a spiral staircase laced with sparkling chandeliers. It will make you go, “WOW!! I Belong Here!!” What is super cool is that if you visit the spa you can hang out on their premises for the afternoon. You do not have to be a guest at the hotel. There is an open air pool with lounge chairs overlooking the sea. The pool is one of those spill over pools and super fancy. You can order drinks and just relax after your unforgettable treatments. This place will leave you feeling like the queen or king that you are.

3) Biking on Mljet : This adventure is not for the faint of heart. The ride was about 50 miles. After some negations with the rental company, we took electric bikes from one side of the island to the other which offered sweeping, unbeatable views of the sea. We rode through a couple small towns and even sited a good lunch spot to anchor for the following day. Biking Mljet is a great way to see the large island FAST. Halfway through our bike was a pizza restaurant that we wanted to try, but did not have time. We would highly recommend making this part of your stop. There’s just one road that goes across the island, so you kind of can’t miss the pizza joint if you decide to partake in this adventure.

4) Dubrovnik Wall Walk : THIS! Ah, the Dubrovnik Wall Walk. This was way cooler than I expected. Dubrovnik is a great way to end your trip. It is classic Croatia and exactly what you expect to see when you visit. When we arrived we enjoyed breakfast right on the water and then walked along the coast beach hopping. Highly recommend. After showers and some relaxation we did the 1-mile wall walk and were pleasantly surprised that we weren’t being shuffled along in a crowd, the views gave us a really cool view of the city and there were drink stops along the way. Beer, anyone, as you take a birds eye view of the city? Yes, please!

5) Running To Beach Sunj On Lopud : Take a semi-easy hike up to Fort Sutvrac on Lopud and then wind your way down to one of Croatia rare sandy beaches, Beach Sunj. On the trip you will experience amazing vistas (perfect for sunrise), church ruins and wind your way down to the beach where you can take a dip before heading back an easy 1-mile walk to your boat. The beach offers a juice bar and many yummy, healthy snacks. This would make for a great extended beach morning if you have the time. Round trip this adventure was about 3 miles.

6) Canyoning In Omis : This was a last minute off the beaten path adventure we stumbled upon and was SO COOL! Canyoning involves hiking, rappelling, floating down rivers and creeks and cliff jumping. It is an adventurers dream! There are two levels offered. We did the advanced level and were just fun tho my husband and I both have a fear of heights (we both fell off ski lifts as kids - weird, right?!). Hubby struggled with it a bit more than I did, but conquered his fears and we both rappelled like pro’s and even did some cliff jumping too. The water was COLD, but they do require you wear wetsuits, so your body temp stays just fine. A bonus at the end of our adventure was enjoying fresh figs from the tree owned by the mother of one of our guides.

7) Cocktail Bar Massimo : Drinks with a view in a castle like tower, anyone? This spot was pretty full and touristy, but a really cool experience. We climbed up a ladder to the bar where cocktails arrive via a hand-cranked pulley. The drinks were pricey, but again the experience was unique and really cool. Highly recommend if you find yourself on Korcula Island.

8) Early Morning Walks Around Old Towns : The more touristy old towns of Croatia can get really crowded. Split, Trogir, Dubrovnik to name a few. Hubby and I found the best time to walk around and take photos and enjoy the sights with our coffee was first thing in the morning when all of the party peeps were still sleeping. You can capture all of the little beautiful nuances of each place without the pics being spoiled but crowds.

9) Fig & Prosciutto Pizza @ Pizzeria Mirakul : Hands down the best pizza I have ever had. This was our dinner on our last night and we stayed up WAY too late. Our waiter kept bringing our group shots (I am not a shot person, btw) and we all kept accepting the bad idea when you have an early flight the next morning. But, we had a blast on our last evening of our amazing Croatian adventure and that memory of the pizza will forever stick in my mind.

10) Kayak To Monastery on Mljet : One last adventure we really enjoyed was kayaking to St Mary’s Island to see The Church and Benedictine Monastery. The kayak took about 20-30 minutes each way. And once again, we ventured out super early to beat the crowds. Since we were kayaking we were on our own timeline and beat the first ferry. We were blessed enough to hear practicing monks chanting in the monastery as we explored the island. It’s not a big island, but the walk from our sailboat to the kayaking place was about 3-miles round trip so we weren’t looking for a big walking adventure once on the island. Instead, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the only restaurant on the island which helps keep the monastery alive.

So, there you go! Our top 10 favorite experiences in Croatia. We had many wonderful memories and since we loved it so much I’m leading an excursion there September 2023. Click HERE for more information. I would love to have you on The Radiant Goddess Elevate Excursion!!

Sleep well after a long hike...

A good night’s rest is key to sleeping in the great outdoors and is possible! You can either opt for a hike in lodge (I can recommend a few!) that provides beds or go camping with the right gear.

big agnus sleeping pad.jpg

Maybe you don’t like camping because you aren’t comfortable at night and don’t sleep well. Or, maybe you love to camp, but haven’t figured out that perfect nights sleep.

I have had my fair share of sleepless nights because the sleeping pad was… well, useless.

It either wasn’t thick enough, wasn’t wide enough and I felt I had to stay still while sleeping or would deflate overnight.

Ugh. Annoying!

I finally found something that works and want to let you in on the secret.

You can go round and round trying different pads and trying to save money, but let’s cut to the chase.

Sleeping pads are something you should invest in - spend $100+ (If you have found something cheaper that works and lasts please do tell!).

The Big Agnus brand sleeping pad rocks! I have the Insulated Double Z, but apparently REI no longer has those in stock. Not to worry - they have other models.

You can find Big Agnus sleeping pads at REI or online. I recommend going to the store and trying them out. Roll them out, blow them up and try them . DO NOT JUST BUY ONE!!

Here is a link to check one of the models out >> Big Agnus Q Core SLX

Let me know what you use and if you get a Big Agnus let me know what you think!

Keep Your Heart Open: Get Rid Of Upper Back & Neck Pain

Keep Your Heart Open: Get Rid Of Upper Back & Neck Pain

I was inspired to write this blog this morning because it’s Valentine’s Day and I seriously LOVE this holiday so wanted to share some LOVE by telling you about one of my favorite restorative stretches, “The Heart Bench.”

I remember learning the heart bench during my 500-hour yoga teacher training.  I had a really tight upper back from all of the running and swimming I was doing and it was just what I needed.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Adventure

Sleeping Bear Dunes Adventure

I have been to Sleeping Bear Dunes dozens of times, but discovered a new way to experience this beautiful place a few years ago.  This off the beaten path adventure is for you if you would like to see more, cover more mileage and would rather do a loop vs an out an back excursion. I really enjoy this 7-mile loop that begins on a paved path for 2 miles, traverses the dunes from miles 2 to 5 and runs along the beach for the last 2 miles.

5 Best Trails In Cincinnati

5 Best Trails In Cincinnati

I grew up in Cincinnati. As an outdoorsy person it can be a bit of a struggle living here and I dream of moving to areas with better trail running and hiking. I love getting off the beaten path, especially in the mountains and along big rivers. Some of my favorite places to trail run are Asheville in North Carolina, Estes Park in Colorado, Santa Cruz in California, Red River Gorge in Kentucky and the Leelanau Peninsula in Michigan.

Just Dance, Stay Injury Free

Just Dance, Stay Injury Free

I think we can all agree that injuries stink!  I have had my fair share. I have had plantar fasciitis, IT Band Syndrome (this is a pain that runs from the hip down the side of the leg), knee pain, hip pain and shoulder pain.  These injuries slowed me down, kept me from going on the adventures I craved and made exercising a struggle when I was able to get out and move.  I can happily say, though, that I am currently injury free…

Guest Blog: How I Found My Superwoman Within Atop Mt Leconte

The "Be Fierce & Flourish Mt Leconte Climb Adventure" was my first trip alone away from my then one-year-old son. I suffered from postpartum depression for many months after his birth, so motherhood became an infinite struggle as I worked to build my identity, partly from what I was before he was born, but mostly into my new role as a mother and who I was apart from him...

Top 5 Yoga Stretches for Hikers & Runners

I run and hike.....ALOT!  I would not be going the distances I go or doing it as often as I do if I did not practice yoga on a regular basis.  restorative yoga is my favorite type of yoga because I am a naturally busy person and love to move.  Restorative yoga makes me slow down and my mind and body benefit a ton.  If you are like me and love to exercise you will no doubt love restorative yoga too.  Check out my 5 favorite stretches with photos below to give you a visual.  I hope this will help to keep you on the trail and on course with your fitness goals!  I hope to see you on an Into The Wild Tour Yoga, Hiking & Food Adventure!

1) Toes Pose.  Curl your toes under and sit back on your heals.  Do the best you can and try to keep the heels together.  Do this for 1 minute.
2) Low Lunge.  Place on foot forward and the other leg back down on the knee.  Shift your weight forward to stretch the quad.  Do each side 3-5 minutes.
3) Standing Forward Fold.  Stand with your feet together or hip distance.  Fold forward and place your hands on blocks or on the floor.  Take deep breaths and hold 3-5 minutes.
4) Calvesasana - Roll up a blanket and place it between the calves and thighs.  Come into virasana or hero's pose.  The blanket stretches the calves horizontally and gives you a nice stretch to prevent plantar faciitis.  Hold 3-5 minutes, rocking from side to side.
5) Wide Leg Forward Fold Tiger Stretch - Place your feet wide, toes turned in and fold forward. Keep your butt back over your heels and crawl your fingertips forward like you are a tiger or tigress.  Keep your butt back and toes turned inward.  Breath deeply for 3-5 minutes.
